horrid(adj.)

15世纪初,“多毛的,毛茸茸的,刺状的”,源自拉丁语 horridus “多刺的,刺状的,粗糙的,可怕的,粗鲁的,野蛮的,未经修饰的”,源自 horrere “因恐惧而发抖,发抖”(见 horror)。意思“可怕的,引起恐惧的”始于1600年左右。17世纪,意思减弱为“不愉快的,令人反感的”。
