OED ventures no further than to suggest "the Germanic base of cramp." This would include among possibilities Bavarian dialect gramp, a scolding word for a naughty child, from Middle High German grimpfen, krimpfen, meaning bent or crooked (for sense evolution compare crook); there is also Swiss dialect grampen, "to grab; to snatch."
