tear-down(n.)

"a complete dismantling" (of machinery, etc.), by 1976, from the verbal phrase; see tear (v.1) + down (adv.). The verbal phrase is attested from early 14c. as "pull (someone) off (a horse);" late 14c. as "raze a wall, gate, etc., by pulling it to pieces by force." The sense of "criticize harshly" is by 1938. Tearer-downer "one who dismantles" is by 1942.
