"挖掘而成的沟渠,尤指用于排水的沟渠",中古英语 diche,源自古英语 dic "沟渠,堤坝",是 dike(参见该词)的变体,最初意为"挖掘",但后来在中古英语中被用于指挖掘时挖出的土堆成的岸或堤。中古英语 diche 也可以指"防御墙"。
