"drug used as an antidote for venomous bites," mid-15c., tiriak, tiriake, ultimately from Latinized form of Greek thēriakē, fem. and neuter of thēriakos "pertaining to wild beasts or poisonous reptiles," from thērion, diminutive of thēr "wild beast, beast of prey" (from PIE root *ghwer- "wild beast").
Especially "snake flesh used as an antidote against snake-bites;" the flesh of a viper was formerly held to be a necessary ingredient of it. Old English had it as tyriaca. The modern English spelling with th- is by 1560s. Related: Theriacal.
