tree-ring（n.）
one of the visibly marked sections of the wood of a tree, in concentric circles, roughly indicating a year of its growth, by 1919, from tree (n.) + ring (n.). Earlier they were called annual rings (by 1906). Cross-identification of ring sequences in different trees was recognized as a way to determine dates by 1911.
