touch-and-go(adj.)
"of uncertain action or outcome," 1812, apparently from the name (attested by 1650s) of a tag-like game. See touch (v.) + go (v.). The fable that the game name tag (n.2) is based on touch-and-go is groundless; the acronym is coincidence. The game also was known as touch-and-run (1815), etc.
