tape-recorder(n.)
"device for recording sound on magnetic tape," by 1932, from tape (n.) + recorder (n.1) "measuring apparatus." Earlier it meant "device for recording data on ticker tape" (1892), perhaps suggested by tape (n.) in an earlier mechanical sense in printing machines (by 1884).
Tape-record (v.) is attested from 1950. Tape-delay "interval between recording and playback" is attested by 1968. Tape deck (n.) is by 1949.
