word-forming element from Greek, used in science and theology and meaning "cross;" from Greek stauros "pole; cross," which is cognate with Old Norse staurr "pole," from PIE *stehu- "pole" (see steer (v.)). The Greek word also formed words for the Crucifixion, e.g. staurōsis "impalement, crucifixion."
