1590年代，“撤退的行为，后退的行为”，也指“退隐的行为”，源自于1570年代的法语词汇 retirement； 其中 retire 和 -ment。1600年左右，“隐私，远离社会的状态”； 1640年代，“退出工作或生意”的含义也逐渐形成。
