1798, "not tranquil; restless." Ultimately from Latin intranquillus, "disturbed," from in- "not, opposite of, without" + tranquillus "tranquil, peaceful, quiet" (see tranquility).
A 1788 appearance of the word is apparently a print error for "in the tranquil."
