ting
late 15c. as a verb, tingen, "make a light, ringing noise," as a small bell; echoic. Compare tink. Related: Tinged; tinging. As a noun from c. 1600.
Ting-a-ling, a varied reduplication to indicate the sound of a small ringing bell, is by 1879, earlier ting-a-ring (1833). Still earlier such a sound had been represented by ting-tang (1670s); hence also tingle-tangle "disturbance, fuss." originally of the noise of bells (1650s), earlier tinkle-tankle (1610s).
