also thumb-screw, 1771 "non-lethal instrument of torture that compresses the thumb or thumbs," from thumb (n.) + screw (n.). The thing itself is attested earlier in Scottish as thumbikins (1684, described as a new invention). As "mechanical screw with a broad flat head turned easily by the finger and thumb," by 1794.
