teeter-totter(n.)
"a see-saw," 1871, from teeter (v.); earlier simply teeter (1855), and titter-totter (n.) in same sense is attested from 1520s (as a verb by 1825). An earlier name for it was merry-totter (mid-15c.); Cotgrave's dictionary (1611) has totter-arse. The modern word is perhaps a reduplication, but totter (n.) "board swing, see-saw" is recorded from late 14c. (see totter (v.)). Also compare see-saw.
