a minced oath, a mild epithet of reprobation, by 1790, an American English colloquial drawled snip of eternal, used as a mild profanity, clipped from phrase by the Eternal (God). Compare tarnation; also see aphetic. Ternal as "everlasting" is attested from mid-15c.
