"a drum," late 15c. (Caxton), from Old French tambour, a kind of drum (see tambourine, which is a diminutive). Used of many things resembling a drum or having an elastic membrane stretched over a cup-shaped device. As "circular frame on which fabric is stretched to be embroidered," by 1777.
