拉丁语 ad- 在与以 -p- 开头的单词或词干结合时的形式； 参见 ad-。在古法语中缩减为 a-，但是在14世纪的法国，15世纪的英格兰开始模仿拉丁语将 ap- 重复为 app-，并扩展到一些在古法语或中古英语中形成的，从未有过拉丁语原始词的复合词（appoint， appall）。

在源自希腊语的单词中， ap- 是元音前 apo 的形式（参见 apo-）。

威尔士家谱和姓名中的父系成分，早期为 map “儿子”，与盖尔语 mac 同源。自17世纪起合并为姓氏，并缩写为 P- 或 B-（Ap Rhys = Price， Ap Evan = Bevan， Bowen = Ap Owen 等）。
