Jimbo
by 1844 as a nickname for a James; probably felt as an elaboration of Jim, but jimbo is earlier as a word in mistrelsy ("Jimbo Jam," 1839), and in U.S. c. 1840 as a generic name for a (New World) Spaniard. A Squire Jimbo is a character in a farce published 1801 as the work of a sergeant in the Royal Lanerkshire militia.
